The Pacific Legal Foundation (PLF) was founded in 1973-74 by a group of lawyers from the California Department of Justice (then under the control of Attorney General Ed Meese) to counter welfare reform and liberal public rights groups that advocated for better environmental and health regulations. The Sierra Club and the Environmental Defense Fund were particularly targeted. The PLF also successfully intervened in Keller v. California State Bar, where it set a precedent for California lawyers to challenge the use of their contributions to the state bar association for political purposes. It was a successful attempt to block class action lawsuits filed by more liberal California lawyers engaged in policy areas such as class action lawsuits and product liability. The organization has been funded [2] in part by a number of conservative corporations and foundations, including the Koch family`s Claude R. Lambe Foundation in 1998. [1] He also won many important social lawsuits in California, including decisions to support election initiatives, end government aid to illegal immigrants, ban affirmative action, and replace bilingual education with English immersion. PLF is a nonprofit organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. It does not charge fees for legal services, but is funded by donations from individuals (53%), foundations (17%) and associations, small businesses and corporations (17%). Aside from legal fees awarded by the courts for court victories, the organization does not receive any money from the government. These are the real reasons why our work is so important. In 1989, Philip Morris began funding the organization through its subsidiary, Mission Viejo (Gated-Community Land-Development Company), largely because the organization was active in the field of property rights and had won lawsuits that limited the ability of states to expropriate or regulate private property. Its subsidiary, Mission Viejo, was interested in fighting a non-growth initiative that had stalled some of its development projects. At the time, Philip Morris only gave an annual grant of $5,000 a year just to keep the organization on its side and available, but it could also have funded some legal projects. In 1997-1998, the PLF partnered with the $10 million funded National Smokers Alliance in a fierce and vindictive legal attack on Professor Stanton Arnold Glantz, a leader of California`s leading anti-smoking organization, Americans for Nonsmokers Rights,[9] trying to publicly mark him as if he had something to hide. A shredder of legal documents (a ruse widely used by the tobacco industry). Glantz had obtained documents from early whistleblowers in the tobacco industry and set up the first publicly accessible website that revealed how the industry worked. By 1983, the organization was considered a „growing force in public service work“ with an annual income of $2.5 million per year [3] and had already begun to spawn other regional legal centers of a similar nature with Scife funds. However, not all of them have focused on the aggressive use of litigation such as PLF. According to a Philip Morris document urging the company to establish closer ties with the foundation, „it has participated in hundreds of cases at all levels of the court and won the vast majority of those who made a final decision — including several in the U.S. Supreme Court.“ We are a new generation public interest law firm.
